This book rocks! Can you really say that about a technical book? Um, yea, if your a geek! This was the main source of study I used for the CCENT exam, I scored 948/1000. Wendell Odom excels at articulating technical information in the most detailed and organized method, period. You won’t find much humor pouring through the text, like you’d find with Chris Bryant or Jeremy Cioara, but its the most complete single ICND1 resource availble.

The book is 17 chapters long, about 30 pages a chapter, except for the Subnetting chapter (about 70 pages), split into 5 parts (really just 4). It includes end of chapter review questions, typical of certification guides, it has appendices on the CD with extra scenarios and subnetting practice. Also on the CD is the pdf version of the book. Its not printable (which really sucks), but its useful for Ctrl + F, to find a keyword on something. The CD also includes some video training, exclusive to subnetting tutorials. The video training has no bells or whistles, but it does the trick. Also on the CD, is the Boson Exam Sim with a pool of ICND1 and ICND2 questions. The Exam Sim is pretty decent, especially since it comes with the book, albeit at least one of the diagrams has incorrect IP assignments, a couple of the questions/answers don’t map correctly, and the exam engine can be a little buggy–but overall a valuable tool ICDN1 preparation.

Some highlights include:

  • A recommended study plan
  • A very complete subnetting tutorial (but not better than Chris Bryant’s)
  • End of chapter review questions that for the most part, make you think, push you to really understand the technology
  • Ultimately very well written with very little errata

If you want to get the most out of your ICND1 study time, this book rocks!

  1. Congratulations on your high score on your CCENT exam. Keep up the good work.
